Two households can describe the same hardness result with numbers that look completely different. A laboratory or utility may report 171 PPM, while a softener installer calls it 10 grains per gallon. Both values describe approximately the same concentration.

Understanding the conversion helps when you compare a public report with an appliance manual, test strip, or treatment proposal.

What PPM means

PPM means parts per million. In dilute water measurements, one PPM is approximately one milligram per liter. Water hardness is normally expressed as calcium carbonate equivalent, so a complete label looks like 171 mg/L as CaCO₃ or 171 PPM as CaCO₃.

The calcium carbonate language does not mean all of that material is literally floating calcium carbonate. It is a standard way to express the combined hardness effect of dissolved minerals using one comparable unit.

What GPG means

GPG means grains per gallon. It is an older unit that remains common in residential water-softener specifications and settings in the United States.

One grain per US gallon is approximately 17.1 mg/L. A historical USGS conversion reference gives a factor of 17.12; consumer tools commonly round that factor to 17.1.

Use these formulas:

  • GPG = PPM ÷ 17.1
  • PPM = GPG × 17.1

For example, 171 PPM divided by 17.1 equals 10 GPG. A result of 120 PPM is about 7.0 GPG, and 200 PPM is about 11.7 GPG.

Why converted results may not match exactly

Small differences are usually caused by rounding. A report might round its laboratory result to a whole PPM, while an equipment control uses whole grains. If you repeatedly convert a rounded number back and forth, the displayed value can drift slightly even though the underlying result has not changed.

The sampling method also matters. A test strip may provide a color range rather than a precise number. A drop-count titration kit may report in one-grain steps. A laboratory result can provide more precision, although extra decimal places do not necessarily make a single sample representative of every day of the year.

Which number should you use?

Use the original unit when possible. If a utility or laboratory reports PPM, keep that number for comparing results and classifications. Convert to GPG when a softener manual or control valve specifically asks for grains.

For equipment sizing, do not rely only on a broad regional estimate. Confirm hardness at the property, determine expected water use, and follow the manufacturer’s sizing method. Iron and manganese may also affect a softener setting or whether another treatment stage is appropriate.

Do the units change the hardness category?

No. The category is based on the concentration, not the label. The USGS general hardness scale is expressed in mg/L as calcium carbonate:

  • 0–60 PPM: soft, roughly 0–3.5 GPG
  • 61–120 PPM: moderately hard, roughly 3.6–7.0 GPG
  • 121–180 PPM: hard, roughly 7.1–10.5 GPG
  • More than 180 PPM: very hard, above roughly 10.5 GPG

Boundary values can look slightly different after rounding. Hard Water Index classifies using the original PPM value, then displays a converted GPG value for convenience.

A quick way to avoid mistakes

Write down the number, unit, sample location, and sample date together. “10” alone is ambiguous; “10 GPG at the kitchen cold tap on August 19” is useful. That context makes it much easier to compare a test with a utility report or nearby estimate without mixing measurements that answer different questions.
