Hard water is water with a relatively high concentration of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. Water picks up these minerals as it moves through soil and rock. Limestone, dolomite, and gypsum are especially important sources, which is why hardness can vary dramatically from one region—or one water source—to another.

Hardness is usually reported as milligrams per liter, or mg/L, of calcium carbonate equivalent. For the concentrations normally encountered in drinking water, mg/L and parts per million (PPM) are used as equivalent units.

The four common hardness classes

Hard Water Index uses the general classification published by the U.S. Geological Survey:

  • Soft: 0–60 PPM
  • Moderately hard: 61–120 PPM
  • Hard: 121–180 PPM
  • Very hard: more than 180 PPM

These categories are useful shorthand, not health limits. Hardness is different from a regulated contaminant and does not have a federal Maximum Contaminant Level. The number mainly helps explain how water behaves in plumbing, appliances, cleaning, and bathing.

What hard water changes around the home

When hard water is heated or evaporates, some of its dissolved minerals can form scale. You may see white deposits on a faucet aerator, shower glass, kettle, coffee maker, or humidifier. Inside the home, the same process can affect a water heater or other equipment that repeatedly heats water.

Hardness also reacts with soap. That can mean more product is needed to form a lather and a film is left on tubs, sinks, dishes, or fabrics. These signs are annoying, but they are not a substitute for a measurement. White residue can have more than one cause, and poor lather can be affected by the product and water temperature.

Hardness is not the same as water safety

A common mistake is to treat a hardness result as an overall water-quality score. It is not. A sample can be very hard and still meet applicable health standards. A soft sample can still contain a contaminant that deserves attention.

That distinction matters when choosing treatment. A conventional ion-exchange softener targets hardness minerals. It is not a universal contaminant filter. Conversely, a drinking-water filter may target a specific contaminant without doing much about whole-house scale.

Hardness can vary with the source water, well depth, blend of sources, season, and operation of the water system. It can also change between the utility and the tap if a building has its own treatment equipment.

A simple hardness kit can be adequate for equipment sizing if used correctly. For a health concern, use a state-certified drinking-water laboratory and order the appropriate contaminant analysis rather than a hardness-only test.

Use hardness as a practical property of water: it helps anticipate scale and cleaning performance and may guide treatment sizing. Keep it separate from health-based contaminant results, verify the evidence behind any estimate, and test at the tap before spending heavily on equipment.
